Trip Details

Bhutan is unlike anywhere else on Earth. It’s the last Buddhist kingdom, where the 17th century often feels more present than the 21st. Its people are warm, gracious, and deeply connected to their traditions. You’ll explore otherworldly monasteries, including the majestic Punakha Dzong and the iconic Paro Taktsang—better known as the Tiger’s Nest—clinging to a cliffside. Tourism here follows a “high-value, low-impact” model, and for those who are up for the adventure, Bhutan offers an experience that feels like a secret—peaceful, preserved, and profoundly special. There are no Western chain stores, and you might go days without seeing another tourist. This journey is more than just a mountain bike trip—it’s a path of self-discovery as you ride hidden historic trails known only to locals and pedal through remote and pristine forests and quiet valleys before reaching the famed Tiger’s Nest. Every stop is rich with culture and nature, leaving you with the feeling you’ve ridden through Bhutan’s soul. The riding is challenging yet rewarding—shuttles up winding roads lead to hike-a-bikes followed by thrilling and technical descents. It’s terrain that tests your body and lifts your spirit. Travel in Bhutan feels like one vast mental and physical retreat—a reset like no other, free from the stress and noise of daily life.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive to Paro. Welcome to Bhutan.

Arrive on a clear day to enjoy stunning Himalayan views from your flight—spot Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, and Bhutan’s Jomolhari and Jichu Drakey. At Paro airport, meet your guide and drive to Thimphu, stopping at Tamchog Lhakhang to cross a restored 15th-century iron bridge. If time allows, take a warm-up ride on the scenic Wangditse XC trail to shake off jetlag. In the evening, visit the Memorial Chorten, then enjoy a welcome dinner of authentic Bhutanese cuisine, followed by a trip briefing and overnight at your resort.

Day 2

Ride Thimpu Valley.

Today’s all about epic riding in Thimphu Valley. Kick off with a steady climb to the towering 169ft Buddha, then drop into the Changangkha trail—fast, flowy, and lined with pine forests and valley views. After a quick shuttle back, hit the DH trail to Babesa for a thrilling descent, then fuel up on momos at a local favorite. Next, meet Bhutan’s quirky national animal at the Takin Reserve before ripping down the purpose-built Takin trail to Bebena. One last push: shuttle to the radio tower, hike to the Chokhortse viewpoint, and bomb down to Wangditse, finishing in Pamtso village. Cap the day with a well-earned city stroll and feast at one of Thimphu’s best restaurants.

Day 3

Ride Madman trail.

Today, we leave Thimphu and drive to Trashigang Gonpa (3,300m), and hike-a-bike to Lungchutse Gonpa through prime Red Panda territory. Strong riders can pedal half the trail, weaving through ancient fir and rhododendron forests. At 3,600m, the monastery reveals epic views of the Himalayan border peaks. From here, drop into a wild 3km descent through misty rhododendrons on historic trails, then hit a fast, flowy section to Mechuna village for a tailgate picnic. After lunch, cruise down to a riverside village, then climb through a pine forest to Punakha, Bhutan’s ancient capital. Celebrate with a cold beer and a laid-back dinner at the hotel.

Day 4

Explore Punakha Valley. Optional rafting and visit Punakha Dzong fortress.

Drive to Punakha Valley and hike 45 minutes through lush rice fields to the hilltop Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal stupa—an architectural gem and the only one of its kind. If the group’s game, hit the Mo Chhu river for a fun white-water float with splashy rapids. Then, explore the stunning Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two rivers, where our guide—an iconography expert—unpacks its rich art, history, and symbolism. Wrap up with a visit to Lobesa village and the quirky Chhimi Lhakhang, Bhutan’s “fertility monastery,” tied to the legend of the Divine Madman. End the day with a hearty southern Bhutanese dinner in town.

Day 5

Ride Punakha and to Gangtey Valley.

Get ready for some epic descents! We’ll shuttle to Talo Village and hit one of the valley's best downhill singletrack trails. Stretching 9 km with a 1,000m altitude drop, this ride takes us through charming villages and monasteries, offering stunning views along the way. Next, we shuttle to Tshochhasa Village for another big descent. From 2,200m to 1,300m, this flowy trail winds through forests, eventually leading us to lush paddy fields near a historic fortress. After lunch, we’ll drive for 2 hours towards Phobjikha Valley along the Dangchu River. Once we reach the pass, we’ll hike for 30 minutes to the yak meadows before riding a breathtaking ridge down into the valley.

Day 6

Ride Hidden Valley of Gogona nad Khotokha.

Today is a big day of pedalling the backcountry where only a few have ventured before. Ride the hidden valley of Gogona nad Khotokha, tucked away and untouched by tourism. Enjoy an authentic lunch at a local farmhouse, followed by an easy pedal for 30 minutes to where we’ll start the hike-a-bike for an hour to reach the pass at 3000m. From here, the reward is one of the most technical and exciting trails we know. The Khotokha trail is 40% rock gardens, then turns into a beautiful forest path where riders can just shred. The flowy trials are full of roots, leaves, switchbacks, natural berms, jumps and some very fast sections, allowing riders to push their limits. There’s a nice resort waiting at the end of the ride.

Day 7

Transfer to Paro. Ride the best-of section of Madman trail.

After a leisurely breakfast and time to soak in the views, we’ll begin our journey to Paro—but not without a ride along the way. We’ll hit the best sections of the legendary Madman Trail, known for its flow, history, and stunning landscapes. After lunch, we continue our drive into the valley. This evening unwind with a visit to a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse for a herbal hot stone bath—a centuries-old remedy believed to ease joint and muscle pain, and deeply relax the body and mind. It’s the perfect way to recover, especially when paired with a cold local beer. Want to go deeper? Massages can be arranged on request.

Day 8

Ride the Wild Jela Trail.

After breakfast, we shuttle 30 minutes to the trailhead and begin a hike-a-bike ascent along the historic Trans-Bhutan Trail to Jela Monastery—a 90-minute climb through ancient fir and rhododendron forests. Perched on a high ridge, the monastery offers breathtaking views and a sense of timeless serenity. From here, we ride the epic Jela Trail—a thrilling 15 km descent and one of the best singletracks in Bhutan, weaving through pristine landscapes and forested slopes. In the evening, explore Paro town on foot. Stroll past artisan shops, browse local handicrafts, and perhaps pick up a few souvenirs to remember your journey through Bhutan’s rich culture and natural beauty.

Guided visit to Tiger’s Nest monastery. Ride Kila Trail.

Your Bhutan adventure ends with a bang. Kick off with a hike to the legendary Tiger’s Nest, clinging to a cliff 800m above the valley—a sacred, awe-inspiring finale. After soaking up the views, hike back down and return to town for lunch. In the afternoon, shuttle to the trailhead for your final ride: a 12km descent on the epic Kila Trail. Loamy up top, flowy in the middle, loose and fast at the bottom—it’s the perfect send-off. Roll straight into a local craft brewery for a well-earned beer, then cap it all off with a farewell dinner and a toast to riding the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
