Trip Details

We begin our journey 250 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in Ilulissat, home to the UNESCO World Heritage-designated Icefjord. This breathtaking fjord is filled with massive icebergs calving from the fastest-moving glacier on Earth. As we ride through Ilulissat’s remarkable rock slab playgrounds, you’ll hear the distant sounds of cracking ice and breaching whales. Our adventure continues with a two-night ferry journey down Greenland’s coast, offering a unique opportunity to take in the awe-inspiring scenery of this remarkable country. From there, we embark on a remote point-to-point singletrack bikepacking ride through a remote inland region near the village of Sisimiut. This segment will challenge your endurance as you traverse a pristine natural landscape, passing nameless lakes and rivers along the way. In addition to the stunning landscapes, you’ll also immerse yourself in the rich culture of Greenland. The local population, descendants of Canada’s Inuit, blend their heritage with strong Scandinavian and Norse influences, offering a unique cultural experience. This expedition includes three nights in hotels, two nights aboard a ship in private cabins, and three nights of self-supported bikepacking. Led by a professional Canadian guide with extensive arctic expertise, this is an unforgettable expedition into one of the most remote and stunning environments on the planet.

Trip Itinerary

We begin our journey 250 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in Ilulissat, home to the UNESCO World Heritage-designated Icefjord.

Day 1

Welcome to Reykjavik. Fly to Ilulissat, Greenland.

Meet in Reykjavik for a flight to Ilulissat, a coastal town 250 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Known for its vibrant, rainbow-colored houses, Ilulissat is situated at the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord, where massive icebergs—some the size of buildings—drift by, having broken off from the nearby Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, the most active glacier in the world.

Day 2

Private boat shuttle to Oqaatsut. Ride to Ilulissat.

This morning, we will board a small boat for a 40-minute journey up the coast to the whaling village of Oqaatsut, home to just 45 residents. After exploring this remote settlement, we’ll embark on a coastal trail ride, featuring exciting rock slab sections, as we make our way back to town.

Day 3

Ride & hike the Ilulissat icefjord. Take an overnight ferry to Sisimiut.

We’ll start the day with a short ride on a technical trail offering stunning views of the Icefjord. Then, we’ll set out on foot for a full day hike along the remarkable Ilulissat Icefjord. In the evening, we’ll board the Arctic Umiaq Line ferry and begin our journey south to Sisimiut. We’ll navigate through icebergs and spot whales during this unique and unforgettable voyage.

Day 4

Ferry journey Greenland coast.

A full day traversing the Greenland coast with non-stop views like you’ve never seen. You can stretch your legs with stops in these small village settlements along the coast: Qeqertarsuaq Aasiaat, Kangaatsiaq and Attu.

Day 5

Arrive in Sisimiut. Take a private charter boat up the fjord. Start the Arctic Circle Trail.

Arrive in Sisimiut this morning, Greenland's second-largest town, with a population of 5,490. The town is known for its brightly colored homes set against a stunning mountainous backdrop. After stocking up on supplies, we'll board a private charter boat and head inland for a few hours, navigating through fjords and passing by old fishing settlements until we reach the starting point of our bikepacking adventure. Tonight, we'll camp out as we begin our overnight bikepacking journey.

Day 6

Ride Arctic Circle Trail.

Wake up surrounded by untouched nature, with the day ahead dedicated to nothing but pedalling through this pristine landscape. After enjoying coffee and breakfast, we'll set out along lakes and rivers, traverse mountain passes, and descend into valleys as we make our way to tonight’s campsite.

Day 7

Ride Arctic Circle Trail.

Today promises to be another challenging day as we continue our ride westward, following rivers and lakes through the rugged landscape. In the afternoon, we’ll catch our first glimpse of the Kangerluarsuk Tulleq fjord before tackling the trip’s most demanding ascent: the formidable Qerrirtusup Mjoriaa pass. We'll end the day by setting up camp in a stunning valley, surrounded by towering peaks.

Day 8

Ride the Arctic Circle trail to Sisimiut.

We’ve come to the end of our journey and it’s time for our last ride - a quick pedal into Sisimiut. Once we arrive, we’ll check into our hotel, enjoy a well-deserved shower, and have a warm meal. In the afternoon, we’ll pack up our bikes and explore Sisimiut, immersing ourselves in the local culture and visiting artisans.

Day 9

Fly Sisimiut to Reykavik.

This morning we’ll bid farewell to Greenland and start the trek back to Iceland for flights home. Bon voyage!

If you have the opportunity to go on any trip with Big Mountain, you need to go. I have enjoyed Costa Rica, Italy (Dolomighty), Nepal, Iceland (twice in 3 weeks) and Greenland, all of them incredible and unequalled in their own way. Solid logistics and accommodation, professional and gracious local guides plus spectacular trails. You just need to roll up, roll out and inhale the scenery while keeping your hands on the bars.
